Laundry Investor asks Sales Rep which Card System has the Best Card Reader

Investor: “Which Laundry Card system has the best readers?”

Distributor Sales Rep: “None of them. They’re all bad.”

That’s how the conversation started…

I recently overheard a conversation between a distributor sales rep and a prospective investor interested in purchasing an existing vended laundry business. The investor had just come back from a laundry investment seminar—energized and impressed by everything modern card systems claimed to offer. But there was also confusion…

“So many options,” the Investor said. “They all seem the same… but different.”

The Sales Rep nodded and explained that he typically recommends a hybrid system—one that allows every customer to pay however they’re most comfortable: coins or cards.

The investor brushed that aside and asked a more pointed question:

“Which card system has the best readers?”

The rep paused… thought for a moment… then said:

“None of them. They‘re all bad.”

Needless to say, the investor was stunned.

The rep continued, “Look—these readers can handle mag stripes, chips, RFID—you name it. Some have LED screens, flashing lights, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi… all the bells and whistles. But at the end of the day, they’re trying to connect to both new and 10-, 15-, 20-year-old control boards with modern tech and treat them all the same.”

He let that sink in.

“All of the card readers?” the investor asked.

The rep smiled, “There are really good systems out there, and we represent all of them—and they all have strengths and weaknesses. Just like coins have their pros and cons. You’ll hear younger owners complain about collecting quarters… dollar coins… jammed coin drops. Mobile apps are popular too. They’re popular because… they’re not dependent on card readers!”

“Here’s what you won’t hear from alternative payment providers…

  • Mag stripe readers wear out, and the stripe on the card wears out
  • LCD screens fade or fail
  • Machine-to-reader communication gets finicky
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Networks drop out
  • Kiosks disconnect and Computers get stuck in a bad loop
  • Servers go down – Onsite, Clouds, Processors
  • Internet outages happen

Electronic payments aren’t foolproof.”

“And every one of those issues?” the Sales Rep added, “That’s a phone call to me.”

He paused again.

“And every minute I spend troubleshooting… is a minute I’m not doing my actual job—helping more people like you.”

Card systems aren’t customer-focused! Customers don’t like card systems. Owners like the card systems!

And here’s the part that didn’t get said out loud…

Technology is great… when it works.

Yes—cards and digital payments help some customers. Using your debit card instead of carrying cash is a very Millennial or Gen Z thing to do! But others don’t want another loyalty card, don’t want their data tracked, and don’t want to leave money behind on a system they didn’t ask for – even if they have every intention of coming back next week. Card systems aren’t customer-focused! Most customers don’t like card systems. The owners like the card system!

And all that backend data?
If you don’t know what to do with it, it doesn’t help you.

You can tweak pricing all day—but if customers don’t know about it, does it matter?
And are they really hoping their laundromat starts emailing them every week?

Probably not.

Most people want to come in, do their laundry, and get on with their day.

  • Clean store.
  • Working machines.
  • Good lighting.
  • Solid WiFi & Big Screen TVs
  • Clean restrooms.
  • Space to fold.

That’s what wins. Start there. And build from there. Listen to your loyal customers. Learn more about your business from listening to them – not from social media influencers.

And don’t fool yourself — this business isn’t passive income.
The best owners are involved, present, and pay attention every day.

It was an interesting conversation. I’m glad I was there to hear it and share it.
